Information Sheet: South African Fitness Industry Survey 2023

1. Research project name

The South African fitness industry survey 2023 as a result of the impact of Covid-19.

2. Invitation

You are herewith invited to participate in this valuable research project. It is important to understand the purpose of the research and what it implicates. Please ensure to read the following information thoroughly, and feel free to discuss it with friends, family or colleagues. If you have any queries regarding the research, or would like any further information, please ask. Your participation in this survey would be most appreciated.

3. Purpose of the research project

This research project aims to examine the factors that will assist the recovery of the South African fitness industry during Covid-19 and beyond. As we are currently living in unprecedented times, little or no research has been performed in a South African context and will be benchmarked against global industry trends.

4. Why you I been selected to participate in the research project?

The reason why you have been selected to participate in this research project is that you are part of the South African fitness industry and that you can provide valuable information for the purpose of this research project.

5. Do I need to participate in the research project?

It is entirely in your own discretion as to whether you decide to participate or not. Should you decide to participate, please keep a copy of this information sheet. Please indicate your agreement to the consent form. Should you change your mind, you may withdraw at any point in time without providing any reason.

6. What will happen to me if I participate?

You will be asked to complete an online survey questionnaire which will take approximately 10 minutes of your time.

7. What do I need to do?

Please answer ALL the questions in the questionnaire truthfully and to the best of your knowledge. No other commitments are required if you participate in the research project.

8. Are there disadvantages and/or risks by participating in the research project?

By participating in the research project, there are no disadvantages, risks, potential physical and/or psychological harm or distress will be experienced.

9. What are the possible benefits of participating in the research project?

As there are no immediate benefits for participants in the research project, it may benefit the South African fitness industry in the long term in its recovery.

10. What happens if the research study ends earlier than anticipated?

Should the research project end earlier than intended, and if you are affected in any way, you will be advised accordingly.

11. Will my participation in this research project be kept confidential?

All the data that is collected about you during the entire research process will be kept strictly private and confidential, and you will not be identified or identifiable in any research reports or publications. Any institution will also not be identified or identifiable. All data collected about you and your responses in the self-completion online survey questionnaire will be stored digitally and will be password protected to ensure the relevant security processes with regards to technology and the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI Act) in accordance with legislation has been applied. Data collected may be shared in an anonymously to a university institution, but no individuals will be identified or identifiable.

12. Will I be recorded, and if so, how will the recording be used?

You will not be recorded in any way in this online survey questionnaire unless separate permission will need to be obtained from you.

13. What type of information will be required from me and why is the collection of this data relevant to this research project?

The online survey questionnaire will ask you about your opinions with regards to the South African fitness industry which will provide valuable information to achieve the objectives of the research project.

14. What happens to the results of this research project?

The results of the research would be published. You will not be identified or identifiable in any report and/or publication. No institution will be identified or identifiable in any report and/or publication.

15. Who is responsible for this research project?

The research project is a partnership with Dr Petrus de Kock, Prof Geoff Bick and Yvonne Verrall.

16. Who has ethically reviewed the project?

This project has been ethically approved by the IMM Graduate School Ethics Committee.
